I think today my Angels want me to give a short message about embracing that which you most want to resist. I have had opportunity to help a few people this week who are going through challenges and what I noticed is our tendency to resist those challenges. When we get sick we just want to get better. When we get ourselves into trouble we just want to get out of it. There comes a point in our lives when it is time to embrace those parts of ourselves which we most want to keep in the closet.
Is there something that you are going through which seems to come along frequently? You think you have conquered this particular demon and then all of a sudden, wham, there it is again?
Maybe it is the tendency to attract a certain type of people into your life, like someone who treats you badly. You think you have learned the lesson and moved on. You meet someone new. You instantly are attracted to them. Time goes along and things seem to be good. Then .... something changes and you start noticing the same pattern. What happened?
Or maybe it is a sickness that keeps coming back. Or maybe it is a pattern of addiction. You may think you have conquered the demon. Years may go by. Then one day, you are having a bad day and you think.. oh.... one cigarette won't hurt, or one drink, one piece of cake, or one trip to the mall. And the old demon is back with a vengeance.
Today I want you to embrace that part of yourself which you are trying to whip into submission. Now I don't mean go out on a drinking binge or whatever your demon is. I want you to have a conversation with that part of yourself. Ask yourself, what are you trying to tell me? What is at the core of the issue? What is it I am trying to hide? What am I trying to cover up? Imagine yourself standing in front of a mirror and looking at that you that likes to eat chocolate cake or smoke or shoplift or drink or engage in toxic relationships. Look at that part of yourself with love and acceptance and tell yourself in the mirror that you love and accept yourself with all your flaws and with all your shortcomings. To steal from AA, the first step in overcoming an addiction is admitting that you have one.
I used to not like the AA tendency to say.. I am an alcoholic. I do believe that we are what we think we are and I have thought that it would be much more positive to say.. I am a lovable wonderful person. Yes this is true but first we have to admit who we are and what we are dealing with. Maybe not forever. But just for today say to yourself... I am...(fill in the blank) and I love myself anyway. Get that demon out of the closet. Embrace it. Just as in a previous blog I wrote about going back to my childhood fears and having a conversation with the snakes under my bed, do this for your demons. Have a conversation with that demon and express love to it for the lessons you have learned. When you embrace your demons they lose their power over you. When you have come to the place where you are at peace with that demon in the closet, then you can move on. You can start to get to the place where you can finish the sentence .." I am ".. with a much more positive affirmation.
Let's get started. There is so much good out there to experience. Don't let the bad stuff hold you back.
